What is meant by fascism?

November 15, 2024

Intro: Categories

To describe, or define fascism, you have to understand something about categories in the world. Categories are human constructs and ideas. They are not inevitably pointing to a definite ‘thing/process’ in that world. This is not a statement that they can never point at something independent and real.

The first point is that nothing exists alone. Humans exist because of the sun, the physical properties known and unknown of the universe, billions of years of genetic accidents, interactions between creatures, the presence of photosynthesis, the temperature range, the huge amounts of non-genetically related bacteria and viruses in our bodies much of which is essential for our function. Things/processes overlap and constantly change, so a human is entangled with many other processes. This makes definition a process of abstraction from a context.

The second point is that as human constructs categories do not necessarily, refer to things/processes that are all the same in the same way. This has been known since Wittgenstein and Vygotsky, but does not permeate much of our thinking. Wittgenstein talked of family resemblance – people in a family do not always resemble each other in the same way.

So when we are looking at things we can call fascism, they will probably not all be the same in the same way. Italian Fascism was not identical to German Nazism. Mussolini was not Hitler. Spanish and Hungarian fascism were different. In an earlier age, Mussolini might even become regarded as a national hero, along with the Medicis etc.

So there is a family of points which they may, or may not have in common, and which they may have in different degrees. The more of these points they share strongly, the more they have in common and the more ‘ideally’ fascist they are.

Fascism involves

Authoritarianism.

People must be loyal to the leader and the party. The leader knows what is best for you. Discipline must be maintained. Disobedience and disagreement will be punished.

The glory of the leader

The leader has mystical powers of genius. People may not understand his reasons but the reasons will be completely sure. You could follow them if you had equal genius. Faith in the leader is required. [If you don’t share that faith the leader can look crazy].

The leader is chosen by God, or some other mystical force like Fate, Destiny, or National spirit. The leader is the exemplary force of the people and the Nation.

Positions in government are allocated by loyalty to the leader, because loyalty and obedience is paramount.

Contradicting the leader is close to blasphemy.

Religion

Fascism is not anti-religion at all. It supports religions which support it and its policies, declare it to be good and the will of God, and justify the fascist hierarchy and heroic striving to be a better part of that hierarchy. As with everything, religious people who challenge them will be suppressed.

Nationalism

The home Nation is supreme and better than any other nation. It is inherently good, and its real culture has no flaws. If there are things/processes the leader or party declares to be flaws this comes from the power of degenerate others, who must be confined, deported, removed or killed. With the degenerates and other enemies of the leader, or Party, heroically removed, then the nation will be restored to its true glory. It will be Great Again.

Heroism

Heroes are prepared to suffer and lay down their lives for the nation and the leader. Heroism is the great calling for men in particular, but women who have huge numbers of children, and devote themselves to family and nation are also heroes. The nation and the leader are one. Disagreements with the leader are displays of degeneracy (lack of heroism), or deliberate subversion. Heroism in the service of the leader is the supreme virtue.

Racism

Certain people are ideal representatives of the real people of the Nation, by skin colour, facial structures etc. They are superior by way of birth. Other people are ideal representatives of degenerate races, who pollute the blood of the dominant race. They must be confined, deported, removed or killed.
Nothing should be done to further racial equality because racial inequality is a fundamental truth and a real basis of life.

Eventually inferior races will be enslaved, die out or be helped to die out

Sexism

Women and men are completely different creatures. Women exist for the pleasure of superior males, and to bear children. This makes women content and families strong. Women who want a different life are degenerate and threaten the stability of the nation. and must be confined, deported, removed or killed.

Lives of superior race fetuses are far more important than the lives of women.

Hatred of Degeneracy

Disagreement with the leader or a lack of heroic enthusiasm for the leader is a mark of degeneracy and physical and spiritual corruption and decay. Degeneracy must be purged. It is vile.

Prime examples of degeneracy are people who do not embrace their heterosexual gender roles, the more vile and inferior races and mentally or physically deficient people even if of the superior race.

Degenerates are people who lead us to revert to the primal and unheroic slime.

Scapegoating

Fascism depends on purging enemies within. Everything that goes wrong is the fault of degenerate and evil people, who are not the ideal loyal race, gender or politics. In reality, they must belong to a fairly non-powerful group in the Nation, so they can be destroyed with ease, but they are portrayed as powerful and corrupting. Everyone is to be unified in hating the scapegoat. When the scapegoat group is purged, it is probable that another degenerate group will made to replace them, to keep the unity forged going.

Life

True life is obedience. Obedience via one’s free will is true freedom. Dedicated obedience may lead heroes to rise up the party hierarchy to their true level. Everyone occupies the position they do because of their natural abilities or because of degenerate corruption. The latter must be purged.

The lives of those who oppose the Party or the Nation are not sacred at all. They are to be exterminated.

Militarism

Heroism for the party is valued. Beating up opponents is valued. Being in pro-party militias is good.
Military order is good. Everyone must obey their superior without question as long as the instructions do not conflict with the leaders.

Fascists will increase military spending even if cutting spending on everything else.

Eventually the nation will have to reveal its destiny in war and conquest as God plans. The best system must rule its neighbours because of the power of destiny and superiority.

Suspension of Elections

Fascists are suspicious of elections. The only genuine elections are the ones that they win. Eventually they will suspend elections, as elections give the forces of degeneracy a way back in. They might have votes to determine the leader’s acclaim, and the leader will get at least 95% of the vote, but that’s it. The need for elections is essentially a liberal fallacy. Being voted out is an impossibility in a fair system as the leader knowns the people, and they know him, and could not vote him out.

Riches

The rich elites and corporations who support and fund the Party are treasures. They will receive cheap and disciplined labour and regulations favourable to them.
However, they must stay obedient to the leader to maintain their positions. While personal and business profit is expected, business is for the good of the leader and the nation.
The rich initially think they chose and control the party but they soon find out that the party cannot be challenged. It has a life of its own, but they generally accommodate.

***

There may be other features of fascism, but these seem to be the basic points. The more some movement has of them, the more strongly identifiable as Fascist it is.

The Supreme Court and Trump

July 2, 2024

I still have not got around to reading the judgement yet, so please be charitable, but my understanding is that one of the problems of the judgement is that few of the important terms are defined properly, and the bias of the judgement is towards increasing the power of the US President, and to reinforce their lack of responsibility to the American people.

After the Court’s decision, the President is immune from criminal prosecution for all acts that can be interpreted as part of their official “core” duties, and given “presumptive” immunity for all other official acts. This appears to allow the official Presidential core or other capacities to be stretched to provide immunity anywhere. Assuming the President has good advisors, it will be very hard to argue that any action is not a core activity or one with “presumptive immunity”.

So if Trump or anyone else says, “As part of my core activity of protecting the constitution and the stability of the Country, I will declare Martial law and suspend all elections” or “I will prevent all Marxists from participating in elections,” defining Marxists to be people who do not vote Republican (which is pretty much the current FOX position and that of many Republican politicians). He can then suspend all elections and remove all non Republican voters and candidates, to cheers from his media.

We can be sure that the President’s party will ignore impeachment, especially if he can have them killed. So no President will ever be impeached, and the President could presumably have the witnesses or prosecutors ‘disappear’ to protect the State from insurrection.

It already seems to be recognised by the Court that Trump’s attempts to force Pence into not certifying the result, is part of his official job of communicating with the VP. His attempts to force the DoJ to overthrow results is part of his core duties as supervising the DoJ. Possibly his ‘talks’ with the governor of Georgia are part of his duties as President to ‘prevent’ electoral fraud, and so on. We have been told he can only obstruct congress by refusing information, so arranging the assault of members by followers does not count. His earlier attempts to obstruct justice in the Mueller inquiry have been ignored anyway.

In other words, because of vagueness over his core capacities (even without presumptive immunity), it should be relatively easy to rule that the President could assassinate someone, or imprison them without trial, as long as he made the connection to a core activity. What a future this opens.

The judgement should have given hypothetical examples of what might be a crime, especially given that it gave comments which are clearly directed at stopping the cases against Trump, but I guess that would have undone the purpose of the judgement. The members of the Court could, for example, have replied to justice Sotomayor’s objections, by saying the president could be prosecuted for organizing a military coup, trying to overthrow an election, shooting unarmed people, starting a war without consulting Congress, or for taking a payment (or gift) in exchange for a pardon etc. but they didn’t. This implies that the judgement potentially recognises such acts as non criminal when committed by the President.

If any of what I’ve written is remotely correct, then I really had expected better of the Supreme Court, even this one. They, at best, show a remarkable lack of understanding of consequences of their actions. If not now, then later, they have made it legal for the USA to be seized by a dictator. This is a decision which supports the Deep State and tyranny.

***********************

I may be being too narrow. It may be that the Supreme court wants to make it so that the rich-power elites can be immune from buying up the government

Earlier this month they essentially legalised bribery by saying in Snyder v United States that a bribe had to be paid before an advantage was given to the payer, and that gratuities, tips, gifts and other signs of appreciation given afterwards were perfectly legal.

This ruling guts most corruption legislation, and previous cases of corruption.

It also frees some of the Supreme Court from challenges of being corrupt themselves. Which is convenient

Agenda 47: the future of law, education and climate denial

June 8, 2024

If, or as now seems likely, when, Donald Trump wins the next election he has for once made it clear what he will do.

There are three core promises, which translate into:

  1. the Department of Justice will become a weapon [this page]
  2. Education will become propaganda enforcing Republican understanding
  3. Climate change will be encouraged.

Justice is a weapon

There are indications that Mr. Trump will attempt to end the existence of the Department of Justice as an officially neutral organistion, and make it a tool for the President’s use.

This policy seems easy to deny because his official position seems highly ambiguous. Some quotations from him imply he would do it, some quotations imply he might do it, and some quotations imply he should do it but that he won’t [1]. [2]. However it does seem compatible with his proposal to terminate rules in the constitution [3], [4] because he did not like the election results, his defense of rioters involved in the attack on the Capitol, and suggestions he might pardon them, and his convictions for financial crimes being denounced as Democrat driven witch-hunts, even when a whole jury found him guilty despite knowing they and their families would be threatened by his supporters if none of them doubted his guilt.

However, in Agenda 47, which is his official public policy document, he is much clearer as to his intentions. He writes:

There is no more dire threat to the American Way of Life than the corruption and weaponization of our Justice System—and it’s happening all around us. If we cannot restore the fair and impartial rule of law, we will not be a free country.

As President, it will be my personal mission to restore the scales of justice in America. We will have fairness and equality under the law.

To that end, I will appoint U.S. Attorneys who will be the polar opposite of the Soros District Attorneys and others that are being appointed throughout the United States. Very unfair to our population. Very unfair to our country.

They will be the 100 most ferocious legal warriors against crime and Communist corruption that this country has ever seen.

Agenda47: Firing the Radical Marxist Prosecutors Destroying America
April 13, 2023

It does not take much imagination to see this as a threat to have the law ignore Republican, and allies, crimes, as this is unfair, and to appoint people who will go after his perceived enemies without any restraint at all. It is standard for authoritarian parties to hold that the law should not apply to them.

That he is trying to slur people by calling the current DoJ officers ‘Soros Attorneys’ may be taken as indicating that he plans a direct attack on the freedoms of those he disagrees with and he will purge them from the office. That he also claims the main problem is “Communist corruption” shows how fake this pretense of reforming the DoJ is. The number of communists in the USA is tiny. The number of communists in positions of power (especially in the DoJ) will be likely be non-existent. However the amount of business and corporate corruption of the kind Trump engages in seems to be very high. This is basically saying the DoJ should not go after corporate corruption, as that would be unfair and communist. By the way, Soros is not remotely a communist, he is a person that thinks corporate domination is not good, that neoliberalism leads to corporate domination and that societies should be open in their discussions of politics. In other words he disagrees with the Republican Party Machine and with Putin.

From these comments we can expect a politicised DoJ. The idea of crushing opponents seems confirmed by other promises in Agenda 47 to protect free speech in universities by getting rid of people who teach things he does not like, and protecting students from learning anything that is not Republican Propaganda. He has also promised to stop investors asking companies not to destroy the environment.

In other words ‘impartial’ means “pro-Trump”. Agree with him or else the reformed DoJ will come after you.

Modern fascism and the hatred cycle

April 20, 2024

Summary:

Fascism involves self hatred, directed at outgroup others under the guidance of a leader seeking total power and total support. The leader generates hatred of the outgroup, in order to build cohesion in the ingroup, and stop members of the ingroup talking with members of the outgroup, and getting different perspectives. This hatred may further help to reduce anxiety by distracting people from the real challenges their society faces and which the established elites don’t want to face either.

The Fascist leader

The fascist leader is always important. The leader tends to claim that he is insightful and clever, and able to benefit the nation through mysterious means; maybe God, fate, or The sacred Market is on their side? However, beyond raising hatred their actual policies and means of implementation of those policies are usually not very clear, or involve vague feel good statements: “We will build the economy to be strong again,” “we will restore true liberty,” “We will bring unity and might back to the country,” “We will avenge our fallen,” “We will stop [outgroup X] from destroying the country” etc.

The people who support the leader become special by supporting the leader’s heroic work and imagining they belong to that leader’s ingroup. Through this bonding and sense of shared labour, they become essential to the recovery of the pure Nation. They have purpose and meaning in their lives.

One certain thing is that although the Leader may attack the elites who he claims are persecuting and holding the populace down, the Leader will always seek the support of a large part of the establishment by rewarding them, and showing people what will happen to people who don’t support him. The wealth and power elites will be fine, as long as they don’t inspire his hatred, by challenging him or mocking him. They will also support him financially as it’s a worthwhile investment, if they judge he has any hope of winning.

Background to Hatred

The important thing is hatred. The Leader identifies those who are to be hated, and justifies that hatred along with the followers, who support the hatred. This builds the ingroup and its loyalties through dismissing other people.

There is always a background to the hate. Hatred does arise out of nowhere. The people have to be desperate, or motivated to embrace hatred against fellow citizens.

However, as well as vague hatred towards the elites who have failed in their job of helping the people, there may well be widespread and painful self-hatred.

In the contemporary USA, for example, the promise is that everyone can get rich. That promise is no longer true, if it has ever been true. However, at one time upwards mobility was possible for a lot of the population so it is part of the story and of people’s experience or their parents experience. Nowadays many of the middle classes may perceive their status as precarious and that they are facing a downward trajectory, or their children will be going down, due to education debts, increasing housing prices, costs of medical procedures, costs of energy, lack of wage increases above inflation, etc.

The only common explanation allowed by mainstream capitalist politics for this perceived decline in possibilities of prosperity, is personal failure or lack of hard work, not economic structures, not the real power and wealth elites, not ecological collapse, not business failure, not ‘free markets’ leading to plutocracy, or whatever. So they main option to explain things is self-hatred for that failure. They have failed their families and in their lives, by not doing what is expected or demanded for survival. If they are religious, then they may have to hate themselves for sinning, of for not getting God to bless them with money, as well. Personal failure often generates self-hatred, which acts to reinforce this resolution, and it is likely to be common in this kind of situation. Self-hatred is a powerful, discomforting and unacceptable force.

Formerly reasonably well off people may also see, or think that they see, that minorities are receiving help and gaining a status that they feel they were never offered. Employers may say, “you did not get the job because you are white”, rather than you did not get the job because we wanted to give it to the boss’s nephew, or because you did not have any experience. This ‘pleasant’ excuse builds added resentment against outgroup members. Or people may see that those who would not have received work, such as women, can now get better work than they do. The formerly well off have gone downhill, and hatred is easily shifted from self to others if people are given an excuse, or if the hatred against others is shared and reinforced by the ingroup.

The Force of Hatred

The fascist leader relieves people by saying the problem is not the result of personal failure but because of outsiders: communists, gay people, transgender people, feminists, Jews, immigrants, Muslims, atheists, Black People, Chinese people, etc. These people as groups, realistically have almost no influence on what happens in society, they are minorities. However, the leader tells their followers that the presence of these foul people explains why their prosperity has declined, their survival is threatened, and why they feel displaced from their own culture. The leader may also attack some people who might be real obstacles to the leader such as opposition parties, the media that is not 100% behind them and so on. These people can also be threatened and used in order to create the sense of a vast noxious conspiracy from which the leader will save ‘us’ good Americans (or whatever).

Self-hatred transformed

Under the Leader’s direction self-hatred can be suppressed, transformed and projected onto the scum he has identified, while the faithful validate themselves by working to reclaim the country’s glorious past. The point of projection, and why it works as a defense mechanism, is that it allows people to stop feeling self-hatred through feeling hatred for others.

As the leader keeps harping on how the outsiders are corrupting, destructive and evil, and need to be removed, no one need feel guilty about their hatred or about attacking the scum themselves. Attacking these people is perhaps distasteful as people might rather not engage with the vile creatures at all, but it is heroic. People who fight against the outgroups are glorious self-sacrificing martyrs to the great cause. If supporters are arrested and convicted it is because the minorities have corrupted the legal system, into a system of witch hunts, or they are really hostages to the corrupt order, held captive until the leader can free them, and welcome them back into the fold. Judges who convict well-intentioned fellow fascists are among the real enemies of the Country, and will have their comeuppance under the new regime of the Leader.

The Fascist leader promises to break the destructive power of these minorities, to restore the image of the perfect citizen, male, straight and of the right race and religion.

Women

Women who are affiliated with the brave and honorable men who attack corrupting scum are acceptable, as long as they recognise the prime function of women is motherhood and caring for the family. They too must show their purity by supporting their men, hating the minorities, oppositions and women who support minorities, or who want other things than motherhood and family and who are not chaste.

Hatred serves the movement and blocks communication

The hatred not only builds a more relaxed psychology for the haters (they are now justified and hating others not themselves), and they have been given a promising (if vague) imagined future, but it forges ties between the faithful and gives them a simple unity of purpose to get rid of (or break the power) of those the Leader has identified as evil. This purpose fills the previous self-hating aimlessness of their lives. As said previously, the hatred they share for these outsiders bonds them to the leader, to the ingroup, and to the vision of the future they choose.

This hatred further blocks communication as the fascists know that the outgroups have nothing worth listening to, and that anything people in the outgroups might say would, at best, be corrupting, and therefore to be rejected automatically. Likewise, people in the outgroups refrain from trying to communicate with fascists, because they think fascists are vicious and stupid. Fascists name call the opposition and the opposition responds similarly.

The abuse may trigger existing self-hatred, but this time the fascists know they are in the right, and can strike back transferring their hatred onto the abusers. This kind of action reinforces the lack of communication and the lack of mutual respect or mutual empathy. It keeps groups apart.

Calling fascists names serves the fascists, and helps them to build and rigidify the ingroup and outgroups and helps justify their cause – people will not listen to their real grievances. When outsiders call the Leader names, this also shows that the Leader is one of ‘us’ suffering the same condemnation and persecution as ‘we’ do. This abuse shows the greatness of the cause, and its necessity, and justifies action against other citizens.

The cycle of hatred becomes a positive feedback cycle, which then helps reinforce and justify the hatred, which is one of the bases of the Leader’s power.

Political Hatred as Defense Mechanism

The mutual hatred may also distract people from real and overwhelming challenges the society faces, such as climate change, predatory capitalism, growing differentials in wealth, alienation from the state etc. allowing the situation to get worse, and allowing the elites to avoid doing anything to solve the problems that people face. The elites may encourage the fascism, precisely because it allows this avoidance, and the Leader does not appear to face up to the real problems either. This also helps reduce the stress of fascist followers. They can relax, knowing that their are no problems the leader cannot solve, by getting rid of the evil outgroups that arouse anxiety.

Polanyi on the rise of Fascism

March 17, 2024

Some degree of planning is probably useful when facing challenges, even granted the limited predictability of complex systems. Businesses need to plan all the time. However, as argued in the previous post, free market advocates attack government planning, especially planning for general welfare and protection from the market, as “a denial of freedom.” The only essentials of freedom are said to be “free enterprise and private ownership” (265). This could be said to be ‘Class War’ because it guarantees

the fullness of freedom for those whose income, leisure, and security need no enhancing, and [gives] a mere pittance of liberty for the people, who may in vain attempt to make use of their democratic rights to gain shelter from the power of the owners of property.

265

These objections to action means that the State becomes useless in facing challenges, particularly those challenges generated by the economic system. It may even privatise some of its operations, making itself and its people more vulnerable to the illth of the market. Polanyi argues that the “victory of fascism was made practically unavoidable by the [free marketeer’s] obstruction of any reform involving planning, regulation, or control” (265).

Freedom cannot flourish in a complex society without support for everyone to be free, or without enabling people to use their freedom. This requires law, regulation, and spending – without spending to help the ‘lower classes’, only the richest are free. It is not freedom to be at the beck and call and whims of a boss, to be the victim of plutocratic corporate planning, or to have no future.

Polanyi points out, that despite the free market ideology, no society is possible in which power and compulsion are completely absent, nor is it possible to have a world in which force has no function. What the free market people appear to want is not a world without power, but a world in which only corporate force can exist, democracy is pointless and the powerful can avoid responsibility for the consequences of their actions. For them the market is absolute good, and the democratic State is bad. The authoritarian state which protects the market is far better. Hence their sympathy to the idea of fascism, which might otherwise be hard to explain.

This [reluctance to plan for freedom] leaves no alternative but either to remain faithful to an illusionary idea of freedom and deny the reality of society, or to accept that reality and reject the idea of freedom. The first is the liberal’s [free marketeer’s] conclusion; the latter the fascist’s. No other seems possible.

(266)

In keeping with the implicit arguments of free market people, fascists protect the market economy and society from collapse, through the “extirpation of all democratic institutions, both in the industrial and the political realm” (245).

Essentially, the defense of free markets, and the diminution of democracy and government planning for general welfare, provides the situation for the rise of fascism.

While people may want to explain fascism by factors such as cultural history “there was no type of background — of religious, cultural, or national tradition — that made a country immune to fascism, once the conditions for its emergence were given” (246).

While fascism aimed at getting a mass following, it is not remotely a democratic or popular movement. Its strength

was reckoned not by the numbers of its adherents but by the influence of the persons in high position whose good will the fascist leaders possessed, and whose influence in the community could be counted upon to shelter them from the consequences of an abortive revolt, thus taking the risks out of revolution

(246)

This means that “fascist tactics were invariably those of a sham rebellion arranged with the tacit approval of the authorities who pretended to have been overwhelmed by force” (238). Fascists were invited in, to save the anti-worker forces and boost the conservative and pro-corporate, counter revolution (248). The elites pretended they had yielded to the people, to give the changes legitimacy.

In the fascist rebellion, the anti-democratic anti-egalitarian authorities preserved and “the bulwarks of democracy and constitutional liberties were stormed and their defenses found wanting in… spectacular fashion” (247), through being weakened by ‘free market’ politicians.

In Prussia, in July 1932, the legal government of the Social Democrats, entrenched in the seat of legitimate power, capitulated to the mere threat of unconstitutional violence on the part of Herr von Papen. Some six months later Hitler possessed himself peacefully of the highest positions of power, whence he at once launched a revolutionary attack of wholesale destruction against the institutions of the Weimar Republic and the constitutional parties. To imagine that it was the strength of the movement which created situations such as these, and not to see that it was the situation that gave birth in this case to the movement, is to miss the outstanding lesson of the past decades.

(247)

Summary

Polanyi argues that the fascist takeover comes about because free market supporters depower the State, de-democratise the State, imperiling freedom and organisation for most people, and destroying the capacity of the State to face challenges. This produces insolvable problems, as no planning or discussion can be allowed. Fascists with the support of the desperate elites (conservatives and free marketeers), resolve these challenges by asserting their power over the State and destroying non-corporate freedom completely. We can also suspect that fascism gave a morality of heroism, co-operation and self-sacrifice to the Nation, which people found more satisfactory than the self-interest of free markets.

I think that Polanyi ignores the importance of scapegoats and hatred to fascists. They were struggling against evil leftists, evil academics, artists, Jews, immigrants and so on. Those creatures were responsible for the troubles ordinary people faced, and so there was no need to challenge the real power elites, who could relax, knowing anger was being displaced elsewhere.

Relevance

This is relevant today because the dominant neoliberals on both sides of politics inhibit government action to help preserve freedom and general welfare, or to act on climate change and ecological destruction, because this might impinge on the ‘freedom’ of the market, to pay low wages, siphon off profits to the elites, or pollute.

The problems are accumulating. Hence neoliberals are shifting to support authoritarian leaders who will (in turn) support corporate action, freedom to pollute, freedom to discard staff, and freedom from having any responsibility for the damage they have caused.

Republicans have basically handed their party over to Trump and authoritarianism. People in the UK seem to be trying for a less leader-focused lack of responsibility in the elites. In Australia the media has promoted the more corporate friendly parts of One Nation, and the Coalition. Everywhere it seems like people are fed up with ineffectiveness, but having their anger displaced onto vulnerable scapegoats and voting for authorities.

The binary options seem to be restore democratic, active and responsible government that can face challenges, or get in the authoritarians who will purge people, protect business, and generate new challenges.

Non-doctrines of modern Fascism ????

June 7, 2023

Is there a philosophy behind Trumpism? I’m not sure. Sometimes I have found that pro-Trump people are even proud they can’t give reasons, other than that they are somehow fighting evil.

This makes the Trump movement even more like Fascism. One of the things I understand about fascism is that it rarely announces a coherent policy or philosophy. Its an appeal to a sense of collapse, and a sense of victimhood, so there are no reasons for supporting Trump. His supporters know their support is good.

A Fascist movement:

  1. makes people feel good, by talking about real Germans or real Americans, so that you feel special as you are part of a special nation and a special group. Maybe a master race. You are one of the chosen for victory,, because you recognise the greatness of the Leader and follow him as your duty to the country.
  2. tells you that the country and you and your children are being victimised by some relatively powerless (but in fascist mythology incredibly powerful if cowardly), minority: jews, marxists, black people, feminists, intellectuals, gay people, trans people etc.
  3. says, the only way of restoring the country’s past glories is to hold these foul people down, or get rid of them – and you can do it under the guidance of the Fuehrer or il Duce, or whatever, and all will be well as a result. You are saving your family and children as well as the country.
  4. The Leader, is an almost supernatural genius, under the guidance of GOD. He knows things. He does things. He is the best at everything.
  5. It does not matter if I, or foul and sneering intellectuals, cannot understand the leader, he works in mysterious ways!! He is guided. He is right.
  6. Anyone challenging the Leader must be one of the evil minorities or else he would not be challenging him. Opponents are evil by definition, how could they not be as they will not see the truth, and so they must be fought against and disposed of.
  7. There is a vast conspiracy against the Leader and against real America, and you can see this because the Leader is unfairly and illegally charged with criminal activities, and our enemies are not.
  8. We must fight aginst this conspiracy and put it out forever. We must control the law, so it does not happen again.
  9. Democrats being evil, are marxists, and probably agents of a foreign power.
  10. The Leader’s loyal followers are True Heroes, because they realise the truth and fight against the massive evil conspiracy run by pedophile Drag Queens. Onwards!!!!
  11. They look forward to gloating over their supposed opponents misery

Umberto Eco on Fascism

From How to Spot A Fascist: “Ur-Fascism

I’m going to move some of these points around in terms of priority and distort some of it.

Fascism springs from frustration, fear of loss, or actual loss, often loss of economic security or social status. Possibly with people who have seen prosperity being replaced by precarity, or siphoned off to some elites, and there is no solution being proposed by anyone that they know about. They rightly feel ignored, uneasy, slighted and resentful. The leader appears to recognise them and their problems and frustration, and channels it. He promises change.

  • Consequently, fascists can emerge from the middle class who fear loss of status, or fear being relegated to worker status.

Fascism promotes unity by denouncing difference and diversity. It attacks ‘intruders’ or those defined as foreign, and those who seem different. ‘We’ become valuable because we share ‘race’, religion, tradition, or nationality. These are matters of kinship.

  • People who differ from fascist views are evil or corrupt – non-kin. They need to be rooted out as they potentially destroy unity, national tradition and the advancement that is rightly ‘ours’. Dissent from fascism is betrayal.
  • Again unity is ensured by condemnation of diversity and finding scapegoats who are ‘different’ in some way, and who can be blamed for the ‘national failure’, ‘national frustration’ etc.
  • The scapegoats should be apparently strong but in reality quite socially weak; intellectuals, people of a minor religion, some kind of relatively poor minority. The enemy should be denounceable as both too strong and too weak or contemptable… certainly they should be easy to beat up, as that shows fascist masculinity in action.

To keep the fascist loyal, their belief in the movement is not abstract, it is deeply emotional and intuitive. It is sacred and beyond mere words.

  • People who cannot accept the fascist beliefs or who think those beliefs are incoherent, are too weak, and unspiritual, to apprehend fascism’s glory.
  • The different are spiritually inferior. Loathsome even. Or they are evil, trying to take faith away from the faithful.

Fascism generally supports an incoherent and imagined tradition. Italians are Romans. Germans are blond Aryans, both civilized and savage. Fascist Americans defend the constitution while ignoring it. Tradition must embrace contradiction, to point at its real glory.

  • Putting contradictory traditions together (‘Syncretism’) helps people bridge their differences, as well as hinder logical rather than symbolic thinking.
  • Tradition has to reject ‘the modern’ and the things fascism is fighting against, like difference. Differences, such as those recognised by ‘multiculturalism’, ‘gender variation,’ sexual expression, lack of artistic realism, and so on, are not considered part of the tradition that is worshiped. However, difference such as social status and command must be recognised as they express the party elite, and post-agricultural tradition always involves hierarchy.
  • The tradition usually imagines that men are the rulers and women are obedient breeders and supporters of male glory.

Fascism is expressed in action, in doing, not in thinking. Thinking is a form of emasculation. Intellectuals are effeminate and evil, unless they denounce the enemy, help action to occur, or justify the mystical strength of fascism.

  • The active principle is that life is struggle. Life is war. Peace is death. Enemies are needed, and must be overcome. The problem is what happens after total victory, after the final solution? The need is to find more enemies, more people to fight against, and that can be internal to the nation, and destroy the nation.
  • In fascism every fascist is a potential hero. Someone who will lay down their life for the party, for the nation etc. Death is the aim. Fascism is the dark side of the hero archetype in action.

The leader is the person who can express, or divine, the true spiritual will of the people, and guide the people to satisfy that spiritual will.

  • Multiple people cannot express that will. Parliaments are corrupt because they don’t express that will, they express argument, or sometimes loss for the leader.
  • The only real Parliament, for a fascist, is completely obedient to the leader and his expression of the people’s will. Everything else is illegitimate.

Dominant groups in society, tend to think they can support fascism, as it recognises their position in the hierarchy. Because of fascisms love of tradition, they can think fascists are conservatives, and will support their place. They also tend to think the leader can remove obstacles, and get rid of worker disobedience. They may even think they can control and placate the leader. Therefore the dominant groups will generally accept and support fascism, in an effort to protect themselves from peril.

The US right and Hungary 2

August 7, 2022

Orbán’s speech in Texas, opens with lots of flattery and a few jokes, but it soon settles into a rhythm more familiar from his last speech to CPAC. He is:

A leader of a country that is under the siege of progressive liberals day-by-day.

Obviously there is a huge army of progressive liberals outside the gates. Like Russia in Ukraine???

I can already see tomorrow’s headlines: “Far-right European racist and anti-Semite strongman, the Trojan horse of Putin, holds speech at conservative conference.” But I don’t want to give them any ideas. They know best how to write Fake News.

He was pretty accurate, but the level of reportage seems to have been pretty low key, just as it was when CPAC went to Hungary. My experience then was that many on the US right had no idea it was happening, and regarded reports as fake news “why would CPAC go to Hungary?”. On the whole, the US media likes to pretend that authoritarian pro-corporate governments are not a threat.

The Obama Administration tried to force us to change the Fundamental law of Hungary, and delete Christian and national values from it.

I’m guessing they tried to support some group which was being declared non-human, but I’ve no idea, he does not say. An accusation is always better if its too vague to be denied, or you don’t look bad making it.

Progressive liberals didn’t want me to be here because they knew what I would tell you. Because I am here to tell you that we should unite our forces.

Fair enough. If you are going to tell lies about progressive liberals and declare war on them, they probably won’t be happy you are here, but it does not prove your virtue.

If somebody has doubts whether progressive liberals and communists are the same, just ask us, Hungarians. We fought them both, and I can tell you: they are the same.

So the technique is as before, try to combine different groups in the one smear of guilt by association. Is it possible that communists and progressive liberals both opposed Orbán for different reasons and did not join together?

political life is ruled by liberal hegemony

If only it was. This is about scare mongering, and suggesting the right has been stripped of rightful power.

So, first and foremost: we need to trust our Judeo-Christian teachings. They help us decide what actions are right and what actions are wrong. If you believe in God, you also believe that we humans were created in God’s image. Therefore, we have to be brave enough to address even the most sensitive questions: migration, gender, and the clash of civilisations. Don’t worry: a Christian politician cannot be racist.

Interesting. Presumably this statement above means that racism is bad, but if you are Christian you just can’t be racist and don’t have to trouble your conscience about it. Which given his speech just before he came in which he supposedly said, seems to be what he thinks.

There is a world in which European peoples are mixed together with those arriving from outside Europe. Now that is a mixed-race world. And there is our world, where people from within Europe mix with one another, move around, work, and relocate. So, for example, in the Carpathian Basin we are not mixed-race: we are simply a mixture of peoples living in our own European homeland.

Conor Friedersdorf Why Viktor Orbán’s Racism Matters in the U.S. The Atlantic 4 August 2022

In Texas he said:

I’ll tell you the truth: in Hungary we introduced a zero-tolerance policy on racism and anti-Semitism, so accusing us is fake news, and those who make these claims are simply idiots.

The idiots obviously include writers on the Jerusalem Post, who report that an official report on anti-Semitism is just a press release with no information on how the data was compiled, that the government has effectively censored Holocaust museums and that:

a European Union survey finds that 40% of Jews in Hungary have thought about leaving the country because of antisemitism, [so] it’s hard to swallow that Hungary offers a high quality of life for Jews.

He implies that mixing is about culture…. ?

Don’t be afraid to call your enemies by their name. You can play it safe, but they will never show mercy. Consider for example George Soros, as you call him here…. He is my opponent. He believes in none of the things that we do. And he has an army at his service: money, NGOs, universities, research institutions and half the bureaucracy in Brussels. He uses this army to force his will on his opponents, like us Hungarians.

George Soros’s army is a recurring figure in his speeches. Indeed there are huge billboards in Hungary which attack Soros. Soros wants an “Open Society,” with many opinions, something which authoritarians do not want. He has not been very successful given the supposed reach of this army. I suspect that Soros’s prime crime, is that he has not believed in the ideology that the free market always delivers the best result, or that corporations don’t have power. But I suspect that Orbán does not believe in a free market either. I don’t know, but he probably believes in a market which cronies with business to make what looks like the best result for Hungary.

You also have to know how you should fight. My answer is: Play by your own rules! But how do you do that? It is as simple as it sounds. You must play to win. ‘You cannot expect victory and plan for defeat.’ You have to believe that you are better than your left-liberal opponents are. And don’t care what the liberals say! They always say you will lose. They say it cannot be done.

You just have to prove them wrong.

Again we learn that in war anything goes. Presumably a Christian not only cannot be a racist, they also cannot play dirty, or destroy tradition or principle in their politics; whatever they do is justified by victory.

this war is a culture war. We have to revitalize our churches, our families, our universities and our community institutions. Hungary is an old, proud but David-sized nation standing alone against the Woke Globalist Goliath.

I’ve already stated many times that the right engages in culture wars, because its real agenda would not be popular and Orbán seems to run similar culture war memes to those of the US Right. Some say he has pioneered the vote rigging the Republicans seem to be engaged with [1]. But that makes sense: if your opposition is evil, you cannot afford the risk of them winning. Again we have the idea of the “Woke Globalist Goliath”. Whatever wokeness is, its not that big a movement, but presumably its an evil giant. Always magnify your enemy while making them look weak?

His next point is that they built a wall and kept out migrants. The corresponding point that Trump said he would build a wall, and failed at enormous cost, after 4 years, is not made.

Progressives claim all over the world that families should not be protected. In Europe they say there is no such thing as family, because love is love and family is family. If you cannot define family, nothing is a family.

This is simply not true. Most progressives do not want violence in families, rape in families and so on. They want families to be protected. This has sometimes been seen as an attack on families, by those people who support violence in families. Who says there is no such thing as family? People do say, however, that there are more complicated families than a married man and woman and their children by that marriage. This is reality, and those more complicated families need protection.

All subsidies are already available to families following conception. Families automatically get tax breaks, the state takes over your student loans after your third child. Women are exempt from paying personal income tax for life after the birth of their fourth child. And we are fighting to extend the same zero tax policy for mothers with three children.

Sounds like communism 🙂 Mother Heroines of the Soviet Unions etc.

He also boasts that children should not know about non-straight people.

We decided we don’t need more genders; we need more rangers. Less drag queens, and more Chuck Norris. We believe there is no freedom without order. If there is no order, you get chaos… In Hungary you will only hear: “more funds to the Police!”

Sometimes you get more chaos the more you try and impose order. But let us remember why people in the US said things like defund the police. This was because many black people, respectable middle class black people, are still treated like criminals by police, even without any criminal record or criminal behaviour. It was because black people are convicted for crimes which are ignored if you are white. It was because black people where killed by police out of proportion to their numbers. It is because police are frightened they are going to be shot if they don’t shoot first. If you can sort out the police, then the police will be more popular. There is no sign that Republicans want to deal with these problems, and maybe they are happy with those problems, and happy to blame the people being shot and arrested. Orbán gives no hints how to solve those problems.

we introduced a flat tax on personal income, which is currently 15 per cent. In just 10 years-time we reduced the tax wedge by 10 per cent, which was the biggest tax cut in Europe. We have the lowest corporate income tax in Europe, which is a flat 9 per cent. With this low corporate income tax last year, we had a 27 per cent investment rate, which was among the best in Europe.

Should it surprise us that corporations pay a lower tax rate than workers? Probably not. That would possibly be pleasing to Republicans as well. The only question is whether corporations pay that 9% or not, or manage to get out of it. If a flat tax works then good.

With the war in Ukraine. He argues that America and Russia need to negotiate peace. I don’t know whether his statement implies that the Ukrainians have a say in this. If they don’t then its a betrayal of peace.

only strong leaders are able to make peace. We in the neighbourhood of Ukraine are desperately in need of strong leaders, who are capable of negotiating a peace deal. Mayday, mayday! Please help us! We need a strong America with a strong leader.

He may just want Russian gas.

We in the West have not faced a crisis like this for a long time. The ideological wars of the twentieth century – against the totalitarian powers of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union – were terrible, but democratic West rallied, and defeated them both. Now the West is at war with itself.

He does not mean the crises of climate change or ecological destruction. It would seem he means people being gay and disobedient, not being professed Christians, having complicated families, resisting being beaten up by police for no reason, or wondering why they are paying higher rates of tax than corporations.

All pretty trivial compared to the challenge of Hitler and Stalin. And let’s not forget that many Christian Churches supported Hitler, and went out of their way not to attack his policies, or refuse to teach “Aryan Christianity.” Hungary might be said to have gone along with Hitler as they later went along with Stalin.

We must take back the institutions in Washington and in Brussels. We must find friends and allies in one another. We must coordinate the movement of our troops, because we face the same challenge

Again its a war. And its a war for ideological space and power. There is no compromise. Only the extinction of liberals having any basis for power. Its a war based on a claim of religious tradition to get some religious bodies onside. It is a war based upon a claim about family and being straight. It is a war based on disliking difference. It is a war in which fixing elections, controlling the media and controlling supposedly independent institutions is considered normal.

Everything is to be held in check and made the same.

The US right and Hungary 1

August 7, 2022

People may know that the important US rightwing Organisation CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) is courting Hungary’s President Viktor Orbán, and getting his advice on how to proceed to win victory in the USA. CPAC has both formally gone to Hungary to observe the results and invited Orbán to speak to them in Texas. So this is not a bit of random noise. This is saying that the USA has no ideas of its own, and it’s a bit like inviting Mussolini to speak to them in the 1930s. It indicates what the US right is looking for, if we did not already know.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Viktor_Orb%C3%A1n_(13581867193).jpg

So its worthwhile looking at Orbán’s two speeches to them. Some of what he says is probably good advice for everyone, and people who are not authoritarian right wingers should pay heed, not only to the authoritarian advice, so they know what is being done against them, but to find out what they might learn.

The first was given in Hungary, when CPAC visited him. It was called “The cure for progressive dominance was invented in Hungary.” Some of us may dispute the idea of progressive dominance, but the idea that progressives are dominant is important to right wing ideology, it makes a good excuse to justify unethical action. Orbán says

four days ago I formed my fifth conservative, Christian government

I guess we can guess that this means he is hostile to non-Christians, and is full of self righteousness, because he has God on his side, and can punish the heathen, or other people he does not like. Some claim that he expelled many Christian denominations from Hungary, so American people should be worried about what Republicans think is Christian. But this might be a bit premature.

How can I contribute to today’s gathering? Perhaps if I tell you how we won: how we first defeated the communist regime; then how we defeated the liberals; and then, most recently, how we defeated the international liberal left when they combined their forces against Hungary in the election.

International people are bad unless they are right wingers, obviously the right is international, but it again conjures the idea that the left is powerful and stretches all over the world.

This problem – if I am not mistaken, both in America and Western Europe – is the domination of public life by progressive liberals. The problem is the fact that they hold the most important positions in the most important institutions, that they occupy the dominant positions in the media, and that they produce all the politically indoctrinating works of high and mass culture.

He offers no evidence of course, again the point is to officially claim that right wing politics is fighting against a monster. It is hard to believe that Rupert Murdoch and Tucker Carlson are dominating the media as progressive liberals, and its hard to pretend that there is not a large body of right wing literature, rightwing publishing houses, or rightwing corporately sponsored think-tanks, or that the right does not feature in many important institutions (including universities), unless you refuse to look, or unless you consider that everyone that disagrees with you is a progressive liberal, and should be removed or censored.

One way you can detect authoritarianism, is a refusal to admit the other side could win legitimately, and to suspend all restraint against that other side, while pretending to be victims to justify whatever steps you might take.

He talks about the revolution against the communists

We thought we had finally got what we wanted, but we were wrong: under the dictatorship liberals and conservatives entered into an anti-communist pact, but at the first subsequent opportunity the liberals sided with the communists. It turned out that in fact they were natural allies. If I am not mistaken, this kind of sinful covenant has also been seen in the United States.

I’m not familiar with Hungarian history, but talking of “sinful covenants” should ring alarm bells, especially as there is no evidence that current day “progressive liberals” have much more in common with communists than the conservative right.

And then, between 2002 and 2010, we saw what generally happens in such circumstances: the socialists spent the people’s money. Hungary sank into debt, the economy fell into recession, inflation ran out of control, unemployment rose and people were unable to pay their bills. Street violence broke out and paramilitary groups were on the march. It was a long time ago, but let us not forget: strings of ethnically-motivated murders outraged public sentiment.

We might wonder which side these paramilitary groups were supporting.

the fruit of progressive government speaks for itself: economic ruin and street violence. When a left-wing government comes to power, the story almost always ends in the same way.

Again there is not even an attempt to justify this. There are plenty of governments that he would call left progressive that don’t encourage street violence and that don’t leave economic ruin. More modern street violence occurred under Trump than under Obama, including the attack on the Capitol and the BLM riots in response to police violence, and Obama started the US economy on a road to recovery from the crash of 2008. Biden seems to be doing ok on the US economy as well. Under Trump the U.S. national debt increased by 39%, reaching $27.75 trillion; the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio the highest since WWII. When he left office there were 3 million fewer jobs in the U.S. than when he took office, which is something of a surprise given the increase spending. However, being able to condemn street violence is probably a good place to be. Most politicians have developed the art of excusing violence by their own.

The first point in the Hungarian formula is to play by our own rules. The only way to win is to refuse to accept the solutions and the paths offered by others.

Another way of expressing this, is don’t play by conventions, don’t play by the rules, don’t heed tradition. Let the rules inhibit others. Never agree with the others. Politics is total war. There is no reason not to encourage violence in the Streets, or violence against opposing politicians. Stochastic Terrorism is great, if you don’t want to risk normal terrorism.

The second point: national conservatism in domestic politics. The cause of the nation is not a matter of ideology, nor even of tradition. The reason that churches and families must be supported is that they are the building blocks of the nation. This also means that one must remain on the side of the voters….. One must find the issues on which the Left is completely out of touch with reality and highlight them – but in a way that can be understood by people who are not eggheads

Churches are good sources of ideology, and they will support people who go along with them and support them. No immigrants. Walls on borders. Lie about what your opponents want.

Third point: the national interest in foreign policy…. the Nation First! Hungary First! America First!

You might wonder what groups are being identified with the Nation, but people will want to know what is in the policy for themselves and their associates. This is reality. Always portray wars in the national interest, or not being involved in a neighbouring war as in the national interest.

Fourth point, Dear Friends: we must have our own media….  My friend Tucker Carlson stands alone and immovable. His show has the highest audience figures. What does this mean? It means that there should be shows like his day and night – or, as you say, 24/7.

There should be no media, other than media which supports the right. This is pretty much the case in Hungary, nearly all the media is owned by supporters of Orbán. But yes, the left needs to heed this and build its own media. Hard, when media requires money and there is an established corporate media which generally ignores the left, but it used to be possible: unions could own media.

Fifth point: expose your opponent’s intentions. As a condition for victory, media support is necessary, but not sufficient…. Here in Hungary we expose what the Left are preparing before they even take action. At first they will deny it, but success is all the sweeter when it emerges that we were right all along. For instance, there is the issue of LGBTQ propaganda targeting children. This is still a new thing over here, but we have already destroyed it…. to quote General Patton again: “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.”

Invent stuff about your opponents, and keep repeating it until it is believed, and then act against what you said they were doing, violently. This can be done by any side that does not believe truth is relevant, or who is prepared to say some minor groups of the opposition represent the whole group of the opposition.

Sixth point: economy, economy, economy. We all know that the Left want to operate the economy according to abstract notions…. When we came to power, we decided that we must only pursue economic policies that benefit the majority of voters

This is probably borrowed from Bill Clinton…. not that he would accept of course. But sadly we know that with control of the media, then you can, like Trump, claim to have made economic progress and people will believe you for a while, and some will be able to truthfully say they are doing better.

Our seventh point: do not get pushed to the extreme. I say this because extreme conspiracy theories rear their heads from time to time on the right – just as extreme utopias regularly rear their heads on the left.

No objection to this, just wish it would happen, and that the right would not deny science, and invent imaginary conspiracy theories to attack their opponents. But I suspect he is saying try to keep the conspiracy arguments in bounds

Eighth point: read every day. A book a day keeps the defeat away. I know that this sounds strange. I am not an academic myself, but the fact is that no invention has yet surpassed the book as a vehicle for understanding and conveying ideas. The world is becoming increasingly complex, and we need to dedicate time to understanding it. I, for instance, set aside one whole day every week for reading. Reading also helps us to understand what our opponents think and where their thinking is flawed. If we know that, the rest is mere technique.

Good advice for everyone. I doubt the Republicans will accept it they seem to be wanting to stop people reading anything that they don’t approve.

Ninth point: have faith. A lack of faith is dangerous. If you do not believe that there will be a final reckoning and that you will be held to account for your actions before God, you will think that you can do anything that is in your power

The problem with this is simply the obvious one that if you think everything you do is guided by God, then you may well think that you can do anything that is in your power.

Tenth point: make friends. Our opponents, the progressive liberals and neo-Marxists, have unlimited unity: they have one another’s backs.

if only that was true 🙂 but it does make them a monolithic block capable of evil, and unprincipled.

if we want to succeed in politics, we should never look at what we disagree on, but instead look for our common ground.

another likely truth. This is why Libertarians and Evangelical Christians can live with pagan fascists.

Eleventh point: build communities. My Friends, over the years I have also learned that there is no conservative political success without functioning communities.

This is true for every politics. Politics must become communal. It must build relationships, identity, mutual support and mutual dedication to the cause. However, he also suggests taking over community organisations to gain influence. For the righteous, communities must have no voice of their own.

the twelfth point: build institutions. For successful politics, one needs institutions and institutes. Whether they are think tanks, educational centers, talent workshops, foreign relations institutes, youth organizations or whatever, they should have a political aspect. Let us not forget: politicians come and go, but institutions stay with us for generations.

This is also true, and follows that only the righteous should have a voice, and there should be no institutions which do not support the righteous and their government. No pluralism. Authoritarians see this uniformity as paradise – an echo of the unity in God.

Few people can stand against this gentle coercion.

Now we see that the progressives are threatening the whole of Western civilization, and the true danger is not from without but from within….

We are dealing with the same people: faceless, ideologically trained bureaucrats sitting in Washington DC and Brussels. Progressive liberals, neo-Marxists intoxicated by the dream of wokeness, those in the pay of George Soros, the advocates of the open society. They want to abolish the Western way of life that you and we love so much: what your parents fought for during World War II and the Cold War, and what we fought for when we drove the Soviet communists out of Hungary.

Again we have the inflation of the progressive evil, to make the fight existential and unbounded. Remember your opponents are evil and faceless. They are completely hostile to civilisation, and they must be removed and driven out. We are right. They are wrong. There is no common point. You might build commonality with those you share goals with, but your defined opponents have nothing in common with you. They must be exterminated. This really is war. And if democracy involves disagreement, and acceptance of disagreement, this is a war on democracy.

How to become a tyrant

July 27, 2021

See also: Techniques of Fascism

There are a number of equally important procedures, so these are not in order of importance. A tyrant has to work at all of them simultaneously if possible.

1) Creating fear is important. Unfortunately, this is not a trait which enables you to recognize tyranny. There are things to be frightened of which have to be dealt with as a society – the black death, fascism, take over of the state by the wealthy, war with people who really do threaten you, etc..

2) Creating a narrative that the tyrant can solve the problems, nobody else can, and that anyone who disagrees is a traitor. No policies are really needed except vague things like “make the country great again”, “free the workers”. Common narratives involve Nationalism (we are the best in the world just by being born here, we have the best culture, the best people, etc. we must fight outsiders who corrupt us), Militarism (we need to fight those who would fight us and we need discipline), hatred of some relatively powerless minority (they are evil) – all of these narratives give the ‘good’ members of society something to join with the tyrant in fighting.

3) Stirring anger. You are being oppressed by university professors, feminazis, Bill Gates, black racists, radio hosts, shopkeepers, etc… The f$%%n rude opposition never gives you a break they can’t listen to reason, they are stupid, weak, red neck slabberdicks… Shock people, numb them, crush empathy with the others….

4) Cultivating blame. The subhuman evil ones are to blame for everything bad; the Chinese, the Jews, BLM, Antifa, people with green eyes, etc…. it is always good to have an easy source to blame for everything that goes wrong.

5) Excluding people – foreigners, outsiders, gay people, women whatever…. that way you become superior, and closed off from other ideas. Make the categories between the “we group” and the “out group” as sharp as possible. There is to be no overlap which allows people to talk out of place, or which allows sympathy.

6) Constantly telling people how wonderful the tyrant is. What a genius he is (and its usually a he). How he knows everything. How the tyrant has mysterious sources of knowledge. How decisively he acts. How the tyrant is one with the people, even if he is a billionaire, or a monk….. How the tyrant is holy. How he is the tool of God, or of Providence etc. with the implication that anyone who objects to the tyrant is objecting to God’s choice. Have pictures of the tyrant everywhere.

7) Lying constantly. This helps set all the other points in motion. Lying constantly, and moving from crisis to crisis can cause excitement and involvement. If people have to show their loyalty by believing whatever they are told by their side, then they loose the ability to think critically and just go along with the mob and the party media. This is kind of the ‘Orwell point’.

To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy

Truth is what helps the tyrant and his party, but this truth is eternal, and everyone who cannot directly see this truth is to be condemned.

Being focused on the latest crisis (always caused by the other side), also distracts people from a coherent criticism of the tyrant.

8) Controlling some Media. Take control over, or alliance with, significant sections of the media, so that by repetition, people think that the lies are the truth, and the leader really is wise, interested in them, and being constantly attacked by the evil ones. Have wealthy allies set up ‘think-tanks’ which spout the tyrant’s truth. Partly this is about controlling and reinforcing the narrative. Aim to discredit oppositional media. Threaten oppositional media. All history leads to the Tyrant, and the rebellion against the old order. More Orwell:

And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.

9) Instigating big social projects. It is a good idea to have some magnificent social projects which honour the tyrant and give people the sense that something good is happening that they can be involved in: making living space; building buildings that show the glory of the Nation; having mass political rallies or displays; building the economy; fighting for the revolution; preparing to defend the Nation. People get annoyed if they have to sit at home, and the economy goes downhill as well – much better they get out as a group…

10) Law is a matter of the Tyrant’s will. The tyrant should honour the law and the constitution in speech, but remember these are only effective as conventions and interpretations secondary to the Tyrant’s will. The law is whatever the tyrant says. If the tyrant obstructs justice, threatens election results, or threatens those who would hold them to account then, in the US for example, this can be excused as ‘free speech’. If no one prosecutes a crime, or they excuse the tyrant, then what is allowed to happen is the new interpretation and the new law, and the only people who object will be traitors. Repeat that the tyrant’s will expresses the true beliefs of those who wrote the laws and the constitution.

11) Violence is an old fashioned necessity for tyranny. Always say the other side used violence first. But hit enemies decisively. It does not matter who, just make examples. Sort them out later. This will also help people to stay loyal, because they know it goes from expulsion to violence quickly so they will follow their instructions and probably think the violence they participate in is simply revenge on their oppressors and gives them freedom from previous and superseded restrictions. They are free!

12) Manufacturing Enemies. This is implicit all the way through these overlapping points, and if I had to say which is the most important point it is this one.

If you persuade people that a particular group of people are the enemies of every true, patriotic person, then you have frightened them, got them angry and ready to use violence. They will refuse to listen to those others, blame them, approve the violation of conventions because of necessity, approve lying and so on. You have sharpened divisions between the ‘we-group’ and the ‘out group’, and applied it to every aspect of life. People become trapped in the language of war. Anything is fair, anything is acceptable to preserve their own lives and the lives of others of the right type. The enemies are out to get you. The enemies attacked you first, by definition. They cannot be trusted. They cannot be dealt with. You have to go along with the tyrant even if you don’t like him, too much is at stake not too. Criticism of the tyrant is evidence of siding with the enemies and betraying the lives of precious others… You are gone.

Tyrants require enemies.

Again the problem is that some level of enmity is always present in reality. This is why the lie appeals to people, it’s based in reality. But usually people inside your own nation are not deliberate enemies, however organized you are told they are, but potential tyranny is organized to prevent people realizing this.

13) [hidden] While being officially opposed to the ruling class (usually a fake ruling class that has no real power), it is a great advantage for the tyrant to side with the established ruling class, as they are usually the wealth elites and can provide money, contacts in the establishment, help bend the laws and constitution, and control at least some of the media to give the tyrant support, and cultivate the lies he needs. This is not always essential, sometimes the rulers can be purged. In either case, eventually the tyrant will establish a new ruling class alongside the wealth elites who are dependent on him and loyal to the project.

Conclusion

These are the processes of tyranny. However, the tyrant eventually has to produce order and predictability, and a sense of progress, so that people can organise their daily lives and hope for the future, or the things that undermine tyranny will come into play too destructively.

War helps postpone the Tyrant’s problems, and is a logical consequence of the process of constructing the tyranny. However, war rarely allows stability – especially war without compromise which is what tyranny encourages. Modern warfare in particular enables destruction, but seems to make it hard to hold gains. The expenses of holding onto gains, usually outweigh the gains being made.

I’d like to say, that while easy to start, a tyrannical state is eventually doomed, unless it can learn to leave people alone most of the time and live in peace. Hitler failed at the latter, the Romans and the Chinese Emperors largely succeeded. Mussolini was doomed the moment he allied with Hitler and joined World War II. The Russians succeeded for a while, and Putin succeeds most of the time.
